Ode to the 'buy song' button
Crafting the Visual and Functional Details of a Button that Defined a Digital Era
Designing the "Buy Song" buttons for the iTunes Music Store was a study in pixel-level precision. Every element, from the color gradient and aliasing of the button labels, were meticulously crafted. The gradient had to strike the perfect balance—subtle yet noticeable—creating a sense of depth without being distracting.
The geometric aspects of the button, including its edges and corners, were also subject to rigorous scrutiny. I tested various levels of corner radius to find that sweet spot where the button would look both clickable and inviting, yet still align with the overall design language of the iTunes Music Store.
This attention to detail extended to the collaboration with developers. It was crucial that the button not only looked good but also felt inviting. I worked closely with the development team to optimize the button down to the code level, reducing any lag or jank. What may seem like a simple "Buy Song/Buy Album and iTunes" buttons to the average person was actually the culmination of countless hours of design work, testing, and iteration.
Every pixel was deliberately placed, making the button not just a pathway to a transaction, but an integral part of the iTunes Music Store experience.
